Harvard president apologizes, says she feels ‘regret’ following testimony before Congress

Claudine Gay, the president of Harvard, has expressed regret for comments she made about antisemitism when testifying before Congress.

“I apologize. Words have power. Gay stated on Thursday in an interview with The Harvard Crimson.

 

“When words amplify distress and pain, I don’t know how you could feel anything but regret,” she said.

Gay testified before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce on Tuesday to address threats against Jewish students at Harvard University and antisemitism in the community.

 

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., questioned Gay about whether advocating for the extermination of Jews on campus is against the university’s anti-bullying and harassment codes of conduct.

 

Gay stated that it would be contingent upon the “context” of the event.

 

When asked if antisemitic remarks would require punishment from Harvard if the behavior deviates into bullying, harassment, or intimidation, Gay answered that it might.

 

Stefanik asked Gay to respond with a straightforward “yes” or “no” once more.

 

“Again, it depends on the context,” stated Gay.
