Speaker Mike Johnson frets that high schoolers increasingly identify as LGBTQ in fundraising email: ‘We have much to repent for’

Speaker Mike Johnson is concerned about the rising number of young individuals identifying as LGBTQ.

He bemoaned the fact that more and more high school kids are identifying as “something other than straight.”

I worry that America might not be able to be saved,” he wrote. “We live in a depraved culture.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson bemoaned the rising number of young people who are identifying as LGBTQ in a fundraising email received on Sunday.

A copy of the email that Johnson sent was originally obtained by Punchbowl News. “1 in 4 high school students identifies as something other than straight,” Johnson said. “What are they being taught in school?”

25.7% of high school kids do not identify as straight, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2021. Of these, 3.2% identify as homosexual or lesbian, 11.9% as bisexual, and 9% as something else, or questioning.

The major campaign arm of House Republicans, the National Republican Campaign Committee, issued the fundraising email with the subject “Does America need more God, Patriot?”

It’s no secret that Johnson is an evangelical conservative who once advocated for the prosecution of homosexuality; yet, since his abrupt rise to the position of speaker of the House, he has attempted to portray his opinions in a more moderate light.

In his first interview as speaker, he said that he supports same-sex marriage as the legal norm to Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“I respect the rule of law, but I also genuinely love all people, regardless of their lifestyle choices,” Johnson stated at the time. “This is not about the people themselves.”

However, the fundraising email, which is signed by the nation’s highest-ranking official Republican, takes a significantly more hostile stance toward the LGBTQ community and what Johnson refers to as a “depraved culture.”

Since the establishment of our nation, our culture has deteriorated greatly, and it continues to do so. Lamenting the “filth that passes for popular culture these days,” Johnson stated in the email, “I fear America may be beyond redemption.”
